The New Camp Cookbook: Gourmet Grub for Campers, Road Trippers, and Adventurers

A Word From Author, Linda Ly

Away from home and under the open sky, cooking is stripped down to the bare essentials, so food becomes its own adventure-but don’t mistake adventure to mean nerve-wracking or hard. Cooking in camp can be as easy or extravagant as you want it to be, but the experience in itself triggers all the senses, making you feel alive and free. There’s a definite pleasure in escaping from our reliance on our kitchens, with their sleek appliances and specialized gadgets, and delving deep into our instincts-taming the flames and guiding the elements of nature to a delicious end.

Recipes included in The New Camp Cookbook:

  • Blueberry Skillet Scones with Lemon Glaze
  • Dutch Oven Cider-Braised Pork Shoulder with Apple and Polenta
  • Spinach, Sweet Potato, and Carrot Quinoa Chowder
  • Summer Ale Sangria with Ginger and Peach
  • Dutch Oven Strawberry-Rhubarb Cobbler

Setting Up a Camp Kitchen

You roll up to the campsite, throw the doors open, and tilt your head back to take in the fresh smell of pine. Your phone shows zero bars of reception. The distractions of home feel worlds away. As the dust settles from your arrival, bins and bags get dragged out of the car. A string of lights goes up in the trees. You pull a cold drink from the cooler, toss another to your sidekick, and start to settle in.

Rise and Shine

The song of the mountain chickadee cuts through the stillness at dawn. The sun starts to peek over the mountains as the smell of coffee wafts into your tent. You stir in your sleeping bag, feeling the brisk air on your face. A tent unzips, and then another. Footsteps find their way to the sound of food sizzling in a pan. Amid the clinking of spoons against mugs and forks against plates, plans start taking shape. A new day of adventure beckons.

Midday Meals

Out here, in the open, the air is crisp and clean, the sun is warm and fragrant, and the views are postcard perfect. But there’s a grumbling in your stomach that’s growing louder. You pull a meal from your pack and perch on a viewpoint to refuel. As you linger over lunch and look out over the landscape, your mind and body feel revived. Being here takes your breath-and your worries-away. Legs strong and spirits high, you can continue on the journey.

Small Bites

Trail snacks. Happy hour. Late night nibbles. Morsels that get you through to the next meal. Little tastes of food aren’t bound by time or place; they show up post-hike or pre-hammock, out on the coast or deep in the woods, and always at the right moment. Elevated by the sights and smells of the wild, this is food that’s meant to be shared outside in good company.

Camp Feasts

As the sun sets over the trees, the alpenglow fades from the peaks and the sky starts to sparkle with a billion brilliant gems, the first wisps of smoke are seen rising from camp. Friends and family pull up their seats and gather around a crackling campfire. Laughter echoes through the woods, bottles of wine are poured into enamelware mugs, and the savory smell of good food fills the air. Tonight, we feast.

Sips & Sweets

Cocktails are stirred and desserts are doled out. Sticky spoons and forks drip with sweet sustenance. In just a few seconds, they’re licked clean. Crumpled napkins sit on empty plates as the coals burn out, the sky turns a deeper black, and the stars glow brighter. Conversations quiet into comfortable silence. You feel your body aligning itself with the rhythm of the earth, and in that moment, life is complete.
