Tecnu Original Removes Poison Ivy & Poison Oak Oils That Cause Rash and Itching
Contact with irritants from poison ivy, oak and sumac can turn into itchy problems. Use Tecnu Original Outdoor Skin Cleanser, a poison ivy wash, after you have been outdoors to remove the rash causing oil, called urushiol (oo-roo-she-all), from poison ivy, oak and sumac.
Tecnu can be used as a body wash to remove poison ivy, oak and sumac oil.
When used within 2-8 hours after exposure to poison ivy, oak or sumac, Tecnu can remove urushiol oil before the rash begins. Once a poison plant rash has started, washing with Tecnu helps remove any oil on the skin allowing the natural healing process to begin without the possible spreading of poison ivy oil (re-contamination).
Poison ivy and oak oil can also spread from contaminated clothing, shoes, gloves, tools and pets. Since urushiol oil does not evaporate, it can remain on these items for months or even years at a time. Use Tecnu Original to wash off the oil and avoid a poison ivy or oak rash from secondary contact.

It all boils down to the skin's reaction to a nasty little oil called urushiol (ooh-roo-she-all). Urushiol is found in all parts of the poison ivy, oak and sumac plants. Although urushiol is referred to as an oil, it really is more like a resin in regards to how it can attach to skin.
Why Does a Rash Develop?
The rash from poison ivy, oak and sumac is the body's natural immune response reaction to the allergen (urushiol). Direct or indirect (second hand) contact with this annoying oil produces a rash in the vast majority of people.
How Long Does a Rash Usually Last?
With a severe case, a poison ivy rash may last up to 30 days or longer. Typically, a mild case of poison ivy rash or poison oak rash can last 5 to 12 days.
That's why it's important to get to the root of the problem and use Tecnu to remove the poison ivy and oak oil (urushiol), which is the source of the rash, itching and spreading.
Removing the toxin (urushiol) from the skin allows the body's normal healing process to begin unimpeded. After using Tecnu, Calagel Medicated Anti-Itch Gel or Tecnu Rash Relief Spray are great choices for use on an active rash to help with the itching, swelling and oozing.
Other Uses for Tecnu: Tools
The rash-causing poison ivy and poison oak oils can contaminate tools and equipment and cause the rash when someone uses the tool later.
Clean equipment with a cloth saturated with Tecnu. Do a simple spot check on an area before applying to the entire piece of equipment. Then rinse off or wipe off completely.
Removes Skunk Odor from Dogs
If your pet is sprayed by a skunk, Tecnu can remove the odor from their fur. Simply, saturate a cloth with Tecnu and wipe down the pet’s coat. Follow with a pet shampoo and water bath.
Removes Tree Sap or Pitch
Tecnu is excellent at removing sap or pitch from skin. Apply Tecnu directly and rub until the stain dissolves to clean pitch.
Removes Toxin on Gear/Clothing
The toxic oils can get on gloves and gear and cause a rash days or months later. To combat this, Tecnu can be applied directly to items like gloves or boots to remove the toxic oils.
Tecnu can also be applied directly to clothing before being laundered, to help remove urushiol. For clothing and gear, be sure and test a small area first before applying Tecnu to the entire article.

Tecnu Original Outdoor Skin Cleanser is a unique poison ivy soap designed to remove the rash-causing oil (urushiol) from your skin, and other contaminated areas, after exposure to poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac plants. Our special cleanser can be used before the rash begins or as soon as possible after it surfaces to wash away oils that cause the rash, itching and spreading. When used within 8 hours of exposure to poisonous plants, Tecnu can remove poison oak and ivy oil before the rash begins. As a first step in rash prevention, simply apply Tecnu directly to dry skin, rub vigorously for two minutes and rinse with water. Once a poison plant rash has started, Tecnu will help remove any toxic oil on the skin, thereby removing the source of the spreading. This allows the natural healing process to begin unimpeded. For best results, use cleanser as soon as the rash emerges and apply to entire body. Apply to un-wetted skin, rub for two minutes, rinse in a luke-warm shower and towel dry. Repeat as needed. Since urushiol does not evaporate, it can remain on contaminated items for months or even years at a time.
