From the Publisher

120 hp don’t sound like much, but for the early 1960s this was fairly adequate

220SE Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz W111 Coupes and Cabrios were based on the chassis of the W111 sedan and produced between 1961 and 1971. They started with a 2.2 L straight six cylinder fuel injected engine (M127) that produced 120 hp

The cabin of both cars was except for the wood trim the same

300SE Cabrio

The top of the line two-door models carried the W112 300 series 3.0 L big-block six-cylinder powerplant (M189) and the 300SE’s air suspension. Like the sedan it offered more chrome trim on the outside to distinguish it from its lower priced siblings

With 150 hp the cars were significantly faster than the models they replaced

250SE Cabrio with sport seats

In mid-1965 the W111 and W112 sedan models were replaced by the W108. As both two-door models were still fairly new and sold well (for such an expensive car), it was decided to retain them and upgrade their engines to the 2.5 L version (M129) of the W108

These “Flachkühler” models proved very successful

280SE 3.5 Cabrio

Two years later, in November 1967, the 2.5 L models were replaced by 2.8 L models (M130). Again, it was decided to retain the two-door models with their internal code W111. As the 2.8 L cars were as fast and less thirsty than the old 3.0 L models, the 300SE two-door models were dropped

The fine looking wood veneer of the instrument cluster was changed to leather

280SE 3.5 Coupe

A bigger change came in 08.1969, when the 3.5 L V8 engine (M116) was offered next to the six-cylinder version. It produced 200 hp and gave the car a top speed of some 205 km/h (127 mph) with automatic transmission. Other changes were a lower, wider grille and protective rubber strips for the bumpers
