An interview with Kenneth and Sarah Jane Wright

What inspired the creation of Lola Dutch?

We see Lola Dutch as an emblem of creative energy personified: a figure of active, fun, and inspired learning. All kids are born curious, but some need a bit of encouragement to create.

We also hope Lola Dutch will give parents and teachers confidence to help those kids, even when, at their peak imaginative and active times, we find ourselves saying, 'You are just too much'(Always with a smile, of course) Passive learning might often feel like the easier path.

but creativity and hands-on learning is never 'too much'.

Our goal is for Lola Dutch to inspire kids to be curious about the world around them, and then to dive in and create on their own. Lola Dutch is the first in a series of picture books that will

continue to explore the endless fun in self-directed, creative learning, and we hope you find that 'a little bit much' is just enough.

What is your creative process? Do you enjoy collaborating?

Kenneth is a teacher, and Sarah is a full-time illustrator, but both of us come from theater backgrounds, so we look at many of our projects like a theatrical production. We start by diving into a character to define who they are and what they value. Then we throw the characters at a problem to see how they act and react often with funny faces and sound effects included! After several story drafts and character sketches, a story starts to rise to the top and just feels 'right'.

Stepping into the role of an author/illustrator couple was pretty intuitive because that type of energetic, attentive collaboration feels natural to us. At the end of the day, Kenneth is the author

and Sarah is the illustrator, but the creative process is very cooperative and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

What do you want readers to take away from the book?

Our message is to let children be curious and give them the resources they need to explore that curiosity. We are convinced that everyone is born with a sense of wonder and an urge to discover, but this modern world we live in can both intentionally and unintentionally squash that magic out of children.

We need children to grow up and be the innovators, inventors, leaders and critical thinkers that will continue to make our world a more beautiful and interesting place. We need them to be the

ones to ask the questions and then have the drive to create something that makes us all better for it. Just remember that the insatiable three year old who keeps asking 'Why' today will one day be telling us all How.

We hope Lola gives children permission (and gives parents, teachers, and mentors encouragement) to make a bit of a mess, and to be 'a little bit much' as they engage in curious and creative learning.

What are some of your favorite picture books?

Kenneth:

Where the Wild Things Are, Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree, The Little House, This is Not My Hat, A Sick Day for Amos McGee and The Sneetches.

Sarah Jane:

The Little House, Winnie the Pooh, Madeline Books and Imogene’s Antlers.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Lola Dutch is a creative and imaginative girl filled with grand ideas. When Lola and her friends, Pig, Crane, Gator, and Bear need breakfast, Lola doesn't settle for plain toast. She prepares a feast of grits, pastries, and crepes. When Lola and her friends get creative one afternoon, they don't just paint pictures of houses and rainbows. Instead, they create their own masterpieces using inspiration from artists like Monet, Picasso, and van Gogh. Through it all, Bear is always the voice of reason reminding Lola she is just a "little bit much." The predictable text structures and patterns of this story makes the text flow well for young readers. The pencil-and-watercolor illustrations add an additional whimsical effect to an already imaginative story. VERDICT Young readers will love this innovative protagonist and her fanciful ideas.—Jennifer Bludau, La Grange Independent School District, TX
