Tiger, man, wisdom, How Tiger Got His Stripes, folktale, Vietnam, origin story, wit, wisdom, pride

Tigers are known for their bold black stripes, but did you know that they didn’t always look the way they do today?

InHow Tiger Got HisStripes, Rob Cleveland humorously retells a folktale from Vietnam that’s all about Tiger, who was once the proudest animal of the jungle. He was even prouder than the peacock. Of course, what Tiger is most proud of was his beautiful golden coat. But as it turns out, Man has something Tiger that doesn’t. Tiger finds out that only Man seems to possess wisdom, and he wants some for himself. Jealous, Tiger approaches Man and demands that he forfeit his wisdom to Tiger. And in a way, Man does.

Tiger finds himself outwitted by Man, and his golden coat pays the cost of his foolish recklessness. This award-winning Vietnamese origin story touches on themes of pride, courage, and resourcefulness and is sure to delight young readers with its entertaining characters and cartoon-like illustrations.
