Here’s a funny story: I wrote this book by accident. After completing my thirty-fifth book, “A Brief History of the Ideas of Western Philosophy,” at age 40, I decided that I had written enough, and that I was finished writing, and I would spend my free time doing other things. Three months later, I had a crisis of faith, in which I decided that maybe it was time for me to leave the Libertarian Party and join the Republican Party, because I wanted to see real change happen during my life, and I knew that, to enact change, you have to get your person elected, and the Libertarian Party didn’t seem to ever have enough votes, but the GOP had enough voters to maybe sometimes win. Perhaps, given my intense interest in politics, it was time to abandon my status as an independent outsider reformer, and join the two-party system.
To evaluate this belief, and to test my hypothesis, I attended the monthly meeting of my local town GOP. The meeting lasted a solid two hours. A few hours later, I wrote up a set of notes, for my own personal use, in order to record the thoughts and observations I had obtained from that experience, simply for my own memory.
But, the next day, in horror, I realized that the notes I had written were roughly 35 pages long, and formed a coherent essay, and that it was good enough to deserve to be published. I had written a book by accident. So I polished my notes and turned them into this book.
However, this essay is not like any of my dozens of other essays: this essay is a work of politics, but it is not political philosophy; instead, I would say that, if I had to categorize it, it is a work of pure, true political science. The essay offers a critique of politics in general, and then offers specific criticisms of the Republican Party and the Democratic Party.
So here, for your reading enjoyment, is my thirty-sixth book.
