Soleus

Positions

• Patient: prone, with the knee flexed to approximately 70°

• Clinician: sitting or standing, facing the patient, on the side being palpated

Instructions

• Palpate the gastrocnemius.

• Move three fingers deep to, and to the sides of, the gastrocnemius (right hand pictured).

• To confirm palpation, have the patient perform resisted ankle plantarflexion

(left hand pictured). You should feel a subtle contraction under your fingers.

Pisiform (Key Reference Structure)

Positions

• Patient: sitting, with the forearm supported by a table or plinth in a supinated and ulnarly deviated position

• Clinician: sitting, facing the patient, on the side being palpated

Instructions

• Palpate along the anterior aspect of the distal ulna with one finger.

• A bony prominence will be felt at the distal aspect of the wrist, just

proximal to the hypothenar eminence.
