When Ruby Bridges was a child, she loved playing jacks and climbing trees. She enjoyed playing with her neighbors and friends. She lived an ordinary life. This all changed when Ruby started first grade. She became a civil rights leader!
In 1960, Ruby became the first Black student in the South to attend an all-white school. Although today’s schools include kids from every race and background, this was not the case in the 1950s and 1960s. Black and white children went to segregated schools.
Ruby faced danger attending her new school, but she didn’t let others sway her from her path. As an adult, Ruby has continued to work to end racism. Today, she is a famous activist who speaks out about injustice.
Ruby has inspired people around the world. Her story reminds them to speak out when they see things that are wrong and shows them that it is possible to overcome fears and change the world—no matter how young or old they are.
