Alchemical Healing Enhances Western Medicine

Through our work, we offer a redefinition of healing that brings the soul back into the conversation and links individual health to the vitality of the world soul—the surrounding community of human and nonhuman beings that make up our world. Alchemical Healing is not meant to be a replacement or even a complement to Western medicine, traditional psychotherapy, or the current symptomatic approach of modern Chinese medicine. Rather, it invites us to leap into a completely different conversation about health. It proposes a new set of values, attitudes, goals, and skills and offers a way to address the nonphysical forms of human distress, the psychic and spiritual imbalances, and disease that are at the root of so much of modern suffering and illness. As my doctor friend says, “What you do doesn’t complement Western medicine, it enhances it.”

Margaret's Simple Heart Meditation

Heart Focus: Begin by taking an easy inhalation and exhalation. Now, bring awareness to the place where you feel your heart, at the center of your chest or a bit over to the left side. You can place your hand over your heart to help you stay focused.

Heart Breathing: Pretend you are breathing through your heart area. Breathe slowly and gently (to a count of five or six) until your breathing feels smooth and balanced.

Continue to breathe through the area of your heart and identify a positive feeling, like appreciation for someone or something. You can recall a time when you felt appreciation or care and re-experience that feeling now. It could be for a pet, a special place in nature, or an activity that was fun. Once you have found a positive feeling, sustain this feeling by continuing heart focus, heart breathing, and heart feeling.

The Subtle Body

The concept of an invisible but palpable energy body that lives alongside our physical structure conflicts with the scientific view of the body as a mechanical, biochemical system. The mutable nature of this “other body,” its tendency to shy away from the light of the rational mind and the fact that it can’t be weighed, measured, or pinned down makes it difficult to talk about in ordinary language. Yet, this other immaterial body has been a central concern of in Eastern and Western cultures for at least the past 2,500 years.

In my years of experience, I found that there is no way to work effectively at a psycho-spiritual level with acupuncture points, flower essences, astrology, dreams, or any other alchemical modality without an understanding of this aspect of our being. Despite the challenges it presents to language and the rational mind, it has been essential for me to find a way to conceptualize, talk about, and consciously work with the subtle body.

You Are Wired for Self-Awareness

Psychologists, brain researchers, and trauma specialists have been studying the MPFC and its effect on the emotional body for the past three decades. There is no doubt that the MPFC endows us with the ability to modulate our emotions, to recognize what is going on inside of us, and to consciously communicate with the deep wisdom of our animal body. Modern research parallels the insights of the ancient alchemists: the alteration of our emotions, our instinctual reactivity, and our patterns of habitual behavior begins with a reversal of awareness, a counter-intuitive flipping of the neurological switch, a turning around of the inner eye. Change in your life begins when you shift the focus of your attention away from the outer world—the others who are wronging you and the events you cannot control— and instead drop down from your thinking mind into the deep yin spaciousness of your heart.
