Great Spangled Fritillary

When the caterpillar hatches from the egg the only thing that it will consume, other than its eggshell, is water. It will then overwinter. In the spring, when the violets begin to grow, the caterpillar will come out of hibernation. It will then start eating, which it only does at night.
