Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Handbook
Impatiens

IMPATIENS

Impatiens were America’s favorite annual flower before a deadly downy-mildew disease came along in 2012 to virtually wipe them off the garden center map. One option is to plant New Guinea impatiens (I. hawkeri), which are naturally mildew-resistant but grow taller, more upright, and with lance-like leaves.

DAHLIA

DAHLIA

Dahlias have gorgeous, big, exuberant flowers up to dinner plate size in rich, striking hues. They come in a ton of different looks. The American Dahlia Society lists 15 different bloom colors and 18 different flower shapes or types. Dahlias aren’t reliably winter hardy in any of the Mid-Atlantic region, but they’re fairly easy to keep from year to year.

FERN

FERN

There are many varieties of ferns with different leaf shapes and colors. Some are suited to deeper shade than others. Regardless of individual specifics, ferns add marvelous texture to a shade garden and do put on a big show when mass planted. Deer seldom bother any fern.

Forsythia

FORSYTHIA

Yellow forsythia flowers are a longtime symbol of spring. These tough shrubs bloom early, providing much needed cheer when almost everything else in the landscape is sleeping. The species has an arching, vase-shaped growth habit, but can grow large and unwieldy.
