Fighter Fred and the Dungeon of Doom

His world looks like a tabletop RPG. For Fighter Fred, it's real life.

Think back to your best roleplaying campaign. The one where the GM made a world so believable you could taste the hippogriff stew. Fighter Fred's world is completely unlike this.

Fred's world feels more like something photocopied from an old-school rulebook. Character class is more important than social class. The economy is entirely described by the Equipment List on page 12. Geography is limited to what can fit on a sheet of graph paper.

But Fred loves it!

He loves having monsters to fight and treasure to gain. Most of all, he loves the people who will go on adventures with him. So even though the elf who wants to roleplay is constantly bickering with the thief who just wants treasure, Fred is sure that in the end they will all become best friends.

That's ... not exactly how it goes.

Will the elf find the sacred amulet? Will the thief get treasure? Will the mage ever get done shopping?

Will Fred be able to hold the party together long enough to answer any of these questions?

The only way to find out is to enter the Dungeon of Doom and place your trust in Fighter Fred.

This is a really really nerdy book. I found it perfectly charming and nostalgic. Anyone who has spent hundreds of hours eating pizza with a bunch of friends, throwing platonic solids around and making saving throws versus dex (to avoid falling into a lava trap) will probably "get it" and anyone who hasn't, probably won't.
