One of many treats inside: Chicken and Sweet Potato Treats

Makes about 30 treats / Prep Time: 60 minutes / Cook Time: 90 minutes

Chicken and sweet potato treats are a tasty way to keep your dog satiated. With protein and carbs, these treats will help fuel long hikes. They taste great and they’re easy to carry.

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Place the sweet potatoes on a baking pan or baking sheet. (For easier cleanup, line the sheet with parchment paper.)
  3. Put the sweet potatoes in the oven and set a timer for 25 to 35 minutes, depending on the size of your halves.
  4. When the potatoes are done, carefully remove them, and turn the oven down to 350°F.
  5. Once the potatoes are cooled, scoop the potatoes out of their skins and into a food processor. Add the boiled chicken, and chop.
  6. In the bowl of the electric mixer, beat the eggs with the chicken and sweet potato mixture until blended.
  7. Add in the whole-wheat flour until just incorporated. (If the dough is really sticky, you’ll need to add a little more flour—just a little bit at a time though, and not more than 1/2 cup overall. You want the dough to be just a little tacky.)
  8. Place the dough on a surface lightly sprinkled with flour and knead a few times until it comes together.
  9. Using a rolling pin lightly coated with whole-wheat flour, roll out the dough to about a 1/4-inch thickness.
  10. Using cookie cutters, cut out the desired shapes and transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
  11. Place in the oven and bake until the treats are dry and edges are golden, about 20 minutes.
  12. Carefully remove from the oven, and transfer onto a cooling rack.
  13. Once cool, store in an airtight container. They should last 4 weeks in the refrigerator.

Tip: Plain sweet potato fries also make great treats. Peel and cut potatoes into fry shapes, and bake at 375°F for 20 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • ½ pound boiled boneless skinless chicken
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, halved lengthwise
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups whole-wheat flour
