WHAT IS AN ADAPTOGEN?

Adaptogens are getting a lot of buzz in the wellness community right now. This classification of intelligent plants is not new. In fact, usage dates back to ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. An adaptogen is defined by Merriam-Webster as a “nontoxic substance and especially a plant extract that is held to increase the body’s ability to resist the damaging effects of stress and promote or restore normal physiological functioning.” Now, what does THAT mean? Let’s delve a little deeper into the history of adaptogens and their incredible powers.

Here are some guidelines to help you begin your journey:

They defined a class of mushrooms and herbs that must have three properties:
In 1968, Israel I. Brekhman, PhD, and Dr. I. V. Dardymov revised the definition of an adaptogen and created the standards that we use today.

They defined a class of mushrooms and herbs that must have three properties:

  • Be nontoxic to the body’s physiological functions
  • Offer widespread support, including physical, chemical, and biological
  • Help bring the body back into equilibrium
THE TERM ADAPTOGEN

  • Start with a single adaptogen to see how your body reacts. You may find the effects are too intense or discover that you are allergic to some of these plants.
  • Once you know how you body responds to various adaptogens in isolation, pre-made blends are an incredible way to find true homeostasis in the body.
  • Log any symptons (or their absence) to track your progress. Be sure to switch up your intake if you feel something has changed.
  • Taking a break from these plants can be beneficial. One day a week, one week a month, or a month a year is recommended.
  • Adaptogens like to be rotated: switch them up every couple of months.
  • Some adaptogens are great for children, but talk to your children’s doctor before adding them to their diet.
  • While you should always ask your doctor about incorporating anything into your routine when you are pregnant, some adaptogens can be amazing for milk supply when breastfeeding.

He Shou Wu (FO-TI) (POLYGONUM MULTIFLORUM)

He shou wu is used for many purposes today, premature graying still being one of them, though this is probably the least of its powers. This intelligent plant is also used as a longevity tonic, with its potent antioxidant capacity. It’s also used to nourish the liver and kidneys, improve fatigue, ease lower back pain, aid in erectile dysfunction, help with constipation, and ease inflammation of the intestines.

Bilberry (EUROPEAN BLUEBERRIES) (VACCINIUM MYRTILLUS)

Bilberry (EUROPEAN BLUEBERRIES) (VACCINIUM MYRTILLUS)

This powerful antioxidant berry has been shown to strengthen blood vessels and capillary walls, improve red blood cells, and increase retinal pigments that allow the eyes to tolerate light, improving overall eyesight. Just like the British pilots, adding this adaptogen to your routine can improve your night vision, while also helping slow macular degeneration, prevent cataracts, and aid in recovery from diabetic retinopathy.
