Product description

South African Krugerrand Silver and Gold Bullion Coins 1 ounce 1/10 oz Random Year 2022 2023

Produced by the South African Mint, the 1 oz Silver Krugerrand represents the overall annual range of the series and is offered to you in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with a certificate of authenticity. First launched in 2017, the series represented the expansion of product type the South African Mint provided to the world.

About the coin: Struck in 99.9% fine silver, the coin is a legal tender backed by the South African Government under the South African Reserve Bank Act, with a denomination of one rand (R1).

  • The obverse of all Krugerrand coins depicts designer Otto Shultsz' profile of Boer statesman and four-term president, Paul Kruger with "Suid-Afrika · South Africa" inscribed around him.
  • The reverse of Krugerrands feature a springbok, the national animal of South Africa, designed by Coert Steynberg. The silver content is inscribed in both Afrikaans and English, as well as the title of the coin "Krugerrand" overhead the springbok, and the year date split on either side of the animal.

About the Krugerrand: First minted on July 3, 1967, the Gold Krugerrand was produced by the South African Mint using metals supplied by Rand Refinery. The name is a blend of the former President of the South African Republic and and founder of the South African Mint, Paul Kruger, and the South African unit of currency, rand. Due to overwhelming popularity, when the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market, South Africa released smaller iterations of the coin, the 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 ounce gold coin. 2017 marked 50 years of Krugerrand production, which was commemorated by the release of platinum and silver versions of the coin.

About the springbok: The national animal to South Africa, the springbok (scientific name Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found primarily in south and southwest Africa. The springbok is characterized with having a white face, a dark stripe running from the eyes to the mouth, a light-brown coat marked by a darker red-brown stripe along their sides. Both sexes have a pair of black, 35-to-50 cm long horns curving backwards off the top of their heads. An interesting feature to the springbok is an action called pronking, where they perform multiple leaps in the air, up to 2 m (6.6 ft) above the ground, in a stiff-legged posture with the back bowed. The springbok can live without drinking water for years, meeting its biological needs through feeding on shrubs and succulents. There are no major threats to the long-term survival of the species, instead being one of the few antelope species to have an expanding population. As such, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources considers the springbox as a "least concern" species.

These coins hold a lot of history behind them and prove to be a worthy addition to your international bullion collection.
