Showy orchid

Showy orchid

Cypripedium reginae

This is a temperate slipper orchid. With its striking pink lip contrasting with white sepals and petals, and pale green, downy foliage, it is the loveliest of North American lady slipper orchids and deserves its common name as showy orchid. With flower spikes up to 90cm/36in long, it is one of the tallest slipper orchids and can soon form a large clump. Unusually for a slipper orchid, rather than being a typically woodland species, showy orchid thrives in boggy conditions. A lovely, white-flowered form is also available.

WHERE TO GROW

Plant in a pot in a moisture-retentive but freedraining compost of two parts loam, one part leafmould and one part perlite, in a cold frame or cold greenhouse. In temperate regions, grow in suitable garden soil, in specially prepared beds or in pots sunk into the ground, in dappled shade.

HOW TO GROW

In the greenhouse, showy orchid requires some shade in summer. Protect in winter from excess moisture, particularly when temperatures are below freezing. Repot when dormant (see Repotting a cypripedium, page 68).

GROWING TIP

Showy orchid tolerates more water than other cypripediums, and it should never be allowed to dry out.

ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL

Over recent years, breeders have produced many easily grown, garden-worthy Cypripedium hybrids in a wide range of colours, which are now available at reasonable prices in orchid nurseries and garden centres.
