Sample 5-Minute Meditation: A Safe Haven

Record the meditation. Then, pick a time to practice and a place where you can be undisturbed.

Choose a time to practice when you will be most alert. The state of being awake in relaxed awareness is optimal, but if you fall asleep, you’re still practicing Yoga Nidra.

For a successful practice, I suggest using a yoga mat on the floor with a few folded blankets placed lengthwise on top so that you have a foundation that is solid yet comfortable.

This practice establishes your Inner Sanctuary.

  • Close your eyes and release tension with a few sighs. Sense your entire body lying on the floor. Feel the upper half of your body as sensation. Feel only your lower half. Now feel both simultaneously.
  • Visualize your Inner Sanctuary—a place, real or imaginary, where you feel alive, happy, connected, and/or at peace.
  • First, notice what you see—shapes, colors, and textures. Pause for a moment as you absorb into your being what you see.
  • Now notice the smells in your sanctuary. Breathe in, and for a moment, simply allow this scent to fi ll up your entire being.
  • What do you hear in your sanctuary? Pick out two or three different sounds. For a moment, allow the sounds of your sanctuary to open up your entire being.
  • Now what do you taste in your sanctuary? Allow this taste to consume your entire being with peace, joy, and love.
  • What emotion do you feel while in your sanctuary? Is it a feeling of happiness, love, sensuality, connectedness, peace, calm? Allow that emotion to fill your being. For a moment, rest in this emotion.
  • Notice how your entire being feels while in your sanctuary. You can return to your sanctuary whenever you wish to be your best in life. Now return your Awareness to your body lying on the floor.
