Blue Light is Everywhere! 

  • Blue light is just another wavelength in the natural spectrum. It’s emitted by the sun naturally, but also artificially by every powered device that is in your home, including light bulbs.
  • Room light is commonly known as just white light. But white light represents a broad spectrum of colors, including blue
  • Blue light has a short wavelength on the spectrum, and has been proven to suppress natural melatonin and lead to health risks.

 

WHY IS BLUE LIGHT A PROBLEM?

Sleep issues: Blue light has been proven to delay the production of natural melatonin in adults and especially in children, who have eyes much more sensitive to light Digital Eye Strain: Excessive “screen time” rich in blue light is increasingly linked to digital eye strain causing headaches, migraines, and leading to other health effects. Circadian Rhythm Disorder: Abnormalities of the circadian rhythm- the body's internal clock. NASA has gone so far as to implement low level blue LED bulbs to help astronauts sleep in space and encourage the production of natural melatonin.

Cut Out Nighttime Screentime

  • Do not allow the use of electronics two hours prior to bedtime.
  • The blue-spectrum light that smartphone and iPad screens give off has energizing properties. (Same, by the way, goes for the blue light emitted by some energy efficient light bulbs.)
  • Consider using Night Shift settings on your devices or apps that minimize the blue light on electronics several hours before your child’s bedtime.
