Understanding Peripheral Nerve Health
Fundamental Physiology
Nerves in the body's periphery (the feet and hands) can get damaged by the effects of diabetes, vitamin B-12 deficiency, too much alcohol, chemotherapy, or for "idiopathic" (unknown) reasons. Often it's simply plain old age. The condition is known as peripheral neuropathy. "Peripheral" meaning at a distance from the brain and spinal cord; "Neuropathy" meaning compromised nerve function.
Impaired Nerve Function
Peripheral neuropathy means nerves are not connecting or signaling effectively with other nerves. This can result in numbness, tingling, and pain, which can lead to ulcerations and -- worst case -- amputations. Those suffering from neuropathy often complain that it feels like their socks are bunching under their toes. Or they feel a burning or stabbing sensation that can result in persistent discomfort.
