SAMPLE RECIPE: FEVER-REDUCING POPSICLES

Fevers are the body’s natural response to defending against germs in our body. This blend of herbs helps lower fever and ease accompanying body aches—and it tastes delicious.

TO MAKE TEA BLEND:

Combine all the ingredients (except for black- berries), and store in an airtight container. Label with the list of ingredients, date, and instructions for use.

TO USE:

Steep 1⁄4 cup of the tea blend in 1 quart of boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool and pour into Popsicle molds for easy freezing. If using blackberries, put 3 to 5 in each mold before adding the tea. You may wish to add a tablespoon of honey if your child prefers them sweeter.

NOTE:

This recipe can be used as a tea, too, if your child is cold and prefers not to have Popsicles. It also can be brewed as a bath tea to help reduce fever. Instructions for making an herbal bath can be found on page 73.

Makes 128 (2-ounce) Popsicles or 32 cups of tea

  • 1⁄2 cup dried spearmint
  • 1⁄2 cup dried prunella
  • 1⁄4 cup dried monarda
  • 1⁄4 cup dried catnip
  • 1⁄4 cup dried blackberry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons dried yarrow
  • 2 tablespoons dried goldenrod
  • Fresh or frozen blackberries (optional)
