Product description

Our Story

Hi, and welcome to Drop Support. When you have a family member who suffers from a medical condition that can lead to falls, you tend to avoid leaving the safety and comfort of your home. As was the case with our family. Our sister suffers from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which is a rare and severe kind of epilepsy, but also has Atonic and Tonic seizures that lead to falls and potential injuries, and with her medical condition, we restricted our lives to any events or environments with hard surfaces.

Why?

Because in the event she would fall, we didn’t want a hard surface breaking her fall, if we weren't able to support her fall in time. After so many years of living restricted, we knew we needed to make a change. A change that would impact our lives.

Drop Support's Objective

Our objective is to help reduce physical injuries in individuals of need, while also increasing their quality of life. Whether it's for a special needs child, grandparent, patient, or student. This starts with giving families, caregivers, teachers, and therapist an innovative tool that did not exist, until now. A safer and more controllable way of providing fall support to those you care about & to those you care for.

Drop Support Product Description

Drop Support harness is a unique, upper body harness that wraps around the user’s waist, shoulders, chest, and torso, with an attached central handle running the length of the torso. The support handle is a point of contact between the user of the harness and the person assisting the user (“assistant”). This is what makes Drop Support unique. The support handle, located on the back, sits vertical, and not horizontal, like a standard gait belt. The vertical handle provides the assistant with a better means of controlling and managing the user's directional motion. The vertical Support Handle isn’t the only thing unique about Drop Support. The added support straps over the shoulder’s and chest area help the assistant in better managing and stopping forward falls.

A gait belt falls short in this area.

Drop Support is being used today in these key areas:

Drop Support & Epilepsy

Meet Ollie, Ollie has severe epilepsy and suffers up to 250 seizures every day.

Epilepsy is not an easy condition to deal with or control.

Drop Support has given Ollie's family a little bit more control to a big problem and helping her stay safe.

According to the Epilepsy Foundation, it is estimated that 3.4 million people in the United States suffer from epilepsy. During a seizure, a person experiences abnormal behavior, symptoms, and sensations, sometimes including loss of consciousness, which can lead to drop attacks.

Most ER doctors are not equipped and trained to care for a special needs child when injuries occur.

Drop Support & Parkinson's

Meet Mrs. Hylton, Mrs. Hylton has Parkinson's, and while that may prevent many from being physically active, it doesn't slow her down with the aid of Drop Support.

It has given her the ability to concentrate on and maximize the value of her workout (essential for staying as well as possible with Parkinson disease) and taken away any fear she had of instability and falling. I or an assistant coach are always with her during her workouts and she’s doing great!

Kevin L. Hylton

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, about 1 million Americans live with Parkinson's disease (PD) . PD is diagnosed if 2 of 4 motor symptoms is present. 1 of these symptoms is, “ Trouble with balance and falls (postural instability)”.

Drop Support has given PD individuals more sense of security which motivates them to live a more active lifestyle.

The Challenge Most Families Face!

The challenge most families are faced with in providing fall support to family members during a fall is how best to break the fall altogether.

Currently, most family members don’t have a means of doing so, other than through physical contact.

The problem with physical contact is the contact itself, which can lead to injury due to excessive force or pressure that family members or caregivers exert when breaking someone’s fall.

In other instances, it’s the lack of or inability to physically gain enough contact with the individual, which they than simply slip thru our hands.

When holding onto their arms or bear hugging is no longer enough, it’s time for a change. A change that will prevent and limit the number of injuries to those we care about or care for.

The Change Most Families Deserve!

Drop Support harness is a unique, upper body harness that wraps around the user’s waist, chest and torso, with an attached central handle running the length of the torso. The support handle is a point of contact between the user of the harness and the person assisting the user (“assistant”).

The design of the harness was brought about by asking ourselves one question.

What’s the best way to prevent a fall?

We came to one single conclusion.

By catching them before the fall, without the need of physical contact. Because even through physical contact, it was still uncertain that we would break the fall.

Drop Support takes the worry out of fall support, because when you grab the support handle. you can feel the fall security.

Fall factor's and how to minimize the risk of falling.

What Elements Play A Roll in Falls?

Center of Gravity & Balance:

  • One key to maintaining balance is to control the location of the body’s center of gravity relative to its base of support.
  • Once we lean forward or backward and allow our center of gravity to move beyond our base of support, we will quickly lose our balance and fall unless we move our center of gravity back over our base.

Gravity:

  • Gravity accelerates objects towards the ground at a rate of 32 feet per second squared. With the force of gravity always pulling us downwards, it’s no wonder that even a small fall can cause big injuries.

Momentum:

  • Momentum is a function of an object’s mass and speed. An object’s momentum determines how much force is required in order to bring the object to a stop.
  • Remember that “a body in motion tends to stay in motion.” When our base of support, our feet, are stopped suddenly, our center of gravity will tend to stay in motion and may extend too far past our base of support, causing a loss of balance and a fall.
How Drop Support can help

How Can Drop Support Help with Fall Factor's?

Center of Gravity & Balance:

  • Use of the support handle, an assistant can aid the user in regaining their balance by helping them find their center of gravity and base of support. If the user begins to fall forward, backwards, or side-to-side, the assistant utilizes the support handle to change the direction of the fall to re-establish the user's center of gravity and allowing the user to find their base of support, which the user will then be stable and balanced.

Momentum:

  • When the Drop Support harness is properly fitted and snugly secured, the assistant has a better chance of slowing the user's forward/downward momentum before it has a chance of gaining acceleration. By limiting or reducing the user's momentum, the assistant is more likely to be able to manage the user's decent, which is both safer for the user and the assistant.
