Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you source your ingredients?

All of the chicken we use is American raised. Our turmeric is grown organically in India, which means on land that has been free from the use of synthetic fertilizers, growth regulators, insecticides or herbicides for at least three years.

Do you source any of your ingredients from China?

No, none of our ingredients come from China.

What are Glucosamine and Chondroitin?

Glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally-occurring compounds found in the cartilage of dogs (and people too). As dogs age, the natural production of these substances slows down, which can contribute to joint pain (especially in the hips), decreased flexibility, and stiffness. This deterioration, combined with other age-related factors, can also contribute to painful arthritis in dogs. A 2007 study, which consisted of a randomized double-blind trial involving 35 dogs, found that dogs with osteoarthritis of hips or elbows who were given a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin orally, showed improvements for pain, weight-bearing, and severity of condition. Another 2007 study and a 2012 study both saw alleviation in pain that correlated with the use of glucosamine and chondroitin by arthritic dogs.

What is Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur-based compound found naturally in plants and animals. In a 2013 study, researchers observed that intake of MSM for 13 weeks "decreased degeneration of the cartilage at the joint surface in the knee joints" in mice who served as models for humans with osteoarthritis. A 2015 study relating to a supplement containing MSM saw "positive effects in improving joint function, relieving symptoms associated with joint degeneration—including joint pain, joint stiffness, joint swelling, difficulty walking, difficulty getting up from bed and difficulty going down stairs—and improving quality of life, in elderly populations." And a 2005 study found that taking a glucosamine supplement containing MSM saw that changes to baseline levels for pain and lumbar stifness were "significantly greater" after four weeks in the group receiving the glucosamine/MSM supplement contrasted to the control group that did not receive it.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a spice that comes from the Curcuma longa root. It is widely used across the world and most especially in south Asia, including India. Turmeric has been used in India for hundreds of years as a medicinal herb. One principal active ingredient in Turmeric is curcumin. Studies have been conducted that explored possible anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis benefits of curcumin. A 2003 review identified a large number of studies on curcumin, including several human trials that found "some evidence of anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin." A 2012 study involving 45 patients with rheumatoid arthritis found that the group of patients who received curcumin saw the "highest percentage of improvement in [Disease Activity Score and American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for reduction in tenderness and swelling of joint scores]" and also found that "these scores were significantly better than the patients" who received an alternative anti-inflammatory medication. It should be noted that curcumin alone has poor bioavailability, which means it does not get absorbed into the bloodstream well when consumed. However, a 1998 study found that taking curcumin with piperine (which is found in black peppper) increased the bioavailability of curcumin by 2,000%.

Why black pepper?

Black pepper contains piperine, which has been found to increase bioavailability. For example, a 1998 study found that taking curcumin (a component of Turmeric) with piperine increased the bioavailability of curcumin by 2,000%.
