Product Description

An engaging memoir, packed full of helpful resources!

As a two-year-old, Ann Campanella’s daughter barely registers on the pediatric growth chart, rarely naps and has intense stomachaches after eating. Doctors and well-meaning friends repeatedly assure Ann that Sydney will outgrow these issues. But at the age of five, Sydney finally receives a celiac diagnosis.

Celiac Mom charts the course of one mother who is determined to keep her daughter safe from gluten, a substance that is literally poisoning her. A noncook, Ann must figure out how to nourish Sydney and avoid painful gluten exposures. She reveals the ups and downs of creating gluten-free habits revolving around family and friends, holidays, vacations, school lunches, summer camps and more. As Sydney matures, Ann must ultimately learn to let go and allow her daughter to make her own choices in a gluten-filled world.

If you are wondering:
  • Does my child have celiac disease? Or do I?
  • What are the symptoms of celiac?
  • What's involved in a celiac diagnosis?
  • How does one transition to a gluten-free life?
  • Where does gluten hide?
  • Are there tips for avoiding gluten?
  • How do I support my child?
  • What are some ideas for handling school?
  • How do we celebrate birthdays and holidays?
  • Is it possible to go on a gluten-free vacation?
  • Can my child still go to summer camp?
All of these questions and more will be answered by this engaging memoir. Celiac Mom takes the reader by the hand and leads him/her from pre-diagnosis through the transition to gluten-free living.

The book also includes:
  • Two weeks of easy gluten-free recipes
  • Favorite family recipes from well-loved chefs

A motivating story that should be read by everyone that needs to avoid gluten.

This should be the book of choice given to any parent holding a new diagnosis of a child's celiac condition and wondering what to do next.

Reading Ann's book was so healing. She spoke so personally of her process and the things she resisted.
Celiac Mom is a real companion for anyone who is walking this walk.
Ellen Bayens, The Celiac Scene

A fascinating insight into a mother's attempts to keep her daughter safe from gluten. A finalist and highly recommended!
The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

Beautifully captures not only the intricacies of celiac disease and the gluten free diet, but also the complex emotional component experienced by patients, families and friends who are all ultimately affected.
Margaret Weiss, Registered Dietitian
Author of Eat Your Rice Cakes

The only way to counteract celiac disease is to eliminate gluten from the diet totally, all day, every day, most likely forever. With meticulous detail and heartfelt emotion, Ann explains how this is achieved, describing pitfalls that have severe consequences and her inadequacies at certain undertakings. Ann's book advances the understanding of celiac disease as well as demonstrates the blessing of having a dedicated caregiver in this monumental task of eliminating gluten from the American diet.

In
Celiac Mom, we see Ann's loving, nurturing . . . concern with guarding her daughter from the gluten society we live in. Not only does our author perfect the role of protector and nurturer, but as Sydney grows older, we see Ann's way of life and food prep as a great model for her daughter and anyone needing to follow a celiac diet.
Gilda Morina Syverson, Memoir Instructor

My Father's Daughter, From Rome to Sicily

The thing I liked best about this fascinating and timely book is how valuable it is for those of us who do not have celiac and who need, very badly, to understand it if we are to help those-- often members of our own family--who do have gluten allergies. A moving story and a useful guide to our behavior and our actions in the future.
