Whipped Shea Body Butter

Scent blends

Natural butters often have an inherent smell. If scent is desired, choosing essential oils or fragrance that complements the scent of the body butter is best. Try these essential oil blends:

  • 1 gram patchouli and 2 grams tangerine
  • 2 grams lavender and 2 grams lemon
  • 1 gram lavender, 1 gram frankincense, 0.5 gram amyris, and 0.5 gram helichrysum

Chapter 2 alchemy for the body

A body butter is a lusciously thick combination of carrier oils, butters, and sometimes wax. The body butter is formulated to provide intense, long-lasting moisturization for your skin. The beeswax gives it staying power and provides an occlusive layer to keep moisture in the skin. It is best applied after bath or shower.

Melt the shea butter in a double boiler. Add the almond oil, coconut, and beeswax. Once everything is melted, transfer the mixture to a medium size stainless-steel mixing bowl and use a hand mixer or wire whisk to mix thoroughly. Set the bowl in an ice bath to quickly cool the mixture, stirring with a whisk or blender until the mixture is opaque, yet still somewhat fluid. Set in the freezer for a half hour or so.

Remove the body butter from the freezer and beat with the hand mixer to homogenize. Add the scent, if desired, and continue to whip until it reaches a fluffy consistency.

Spoon into jars and cover with tightfitting lids. Yield: Fills approximately five 4-ounce jars (depending on the amount of 'fluff').

Mango Shrikhand

Yield: Makes 2–3 half-cup servings

This dessert has its origins in Northern India. Shrikhand is a sweetened, strained yogurt often served with added fruits, nuts, and spices. I usually make this when I need whey for lacto-fermentation (see recipe). It is perfect for hot summer days!

Directions

Pour the strained yogurt into a medium bowl and set aside.

Pour the milk into a small bowl and warm to a temperature of approximately 120°F in the microwave. Add the saffron and mix. While still warm, add the honey and stir to combine. The warmth of the milk should help to soften the honey, allowing it to mix with the cool yogurt.

Add the milk and honey mixture, cardamom powder, and mango puree to the strained yogurt. Stir gently until it is completely mixed.

Spoon the mixture into dessert dishes and chill. If desired, top with the chopped nuts right before serving.

Materials

  • 3/4 cup strained yogurt (approx. 2 cups unstrained)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Saffron, a few threads, crushed
  • 1/4 cup honey (if mangoes are super sweet, start with less)
  • 1/4 teaspoon green cardamom powder
  • 1/4 –1/2 cup mango puree
  • 6–8 pistachios (or other nuts like, almonds, or cashews) chopped finely, optional
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Medium bowl
  • Small bowl (microwave safe)
