Introduction

Providing nutritious food for your children is a no-brainer for most parents, but it’s not always easy to do when you’re running between school, work, play dates, errands, and family commitments. Baby food pouches give you a convenient option on the go that’s nearly mess-free, and grocery stores stock an incredible variety of flavors. Unfortunately, it’s hard to know what’s really in those pouches, and as a one-time-use food item, they produce a lot of waste.

Savory Purees

Savory purees in pouches will introduce your baby to a world of new flavors! Some of the stronger flavors may surprise your baby the first time he or she tastes them. Don’t give up—for many babies, it takes several tries before they begin to enjoy a new food. Adding breastmilk or formula to the pouch the first time you give a new flavor will help your baby adjust to the new taste. The purees in this chapter start out simple, with just one or two ingredients, and gradually become more complex.

Sweet Purees

Here are lots of food combinations that your little one will love, but don’t let the flavor fool you—these sweet purees are full of important vitamins and minerals. The sweet flavor profile is closer to what your baby is used to from breastmilk or formula, so you may not need to add much liquid to these recipes. If you make several fruit purees at once, try mixing complementary flavors in a single pouch. Some of the simpler purees in this section can be mixed with almost any other puree to help alter the consistency or create a flavor profile that’s more familiar to baby.

Savory Purees: Asparagus, chickpea, and sweet potato puree

Yield 2–3 cups (450–675 g)

This makes a protein-rich, creamy, satisfying baby meal. Asparagus adds a nutty taste, and the chickpeas create the sustenance, which is rounded out nicely with the sweetness of the sweet potato.

From time to time, asparagus can cause little ones to have a little extra wind. It’s generally nothing to worry about, but make a mental note in case you notice some unwanted side effects.

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C, or gas mark 6).

2. With a fork, poke holes all over the sweet potato’s skin.

3. Place the sweet potato on a baking sheet in a baking dish and bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until the flesh turns soft and tender when pierced with a fork.

4. Cool and peel the sweet potato.

5. Remove and discard the woody ends of the asparagus. Chop the asparagus into 1-inch (2.5 cm) lengths.

6. Place the chopped asparagus into a steamer pot. Steam for about 15 minutes or until soft.

7. Blend it all. A food processor or blender works best here. Add breastmilk or formula to reach desired consistency.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 1 handful asparagus, fresh or frozen
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (10 to 20 g) cooked chickpeas, or (15 to 30 g) canned organic unsalted
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (10 to 20 g) breastmilk or formula

Sweet Purees: Plum and fujI apple puree

Yield 1½ cups (375 g)

This sweet, dynamic duo is a crowd pleaser. It’s the perfect combination of tart and sweet and is a nice starter baby food. It’s easy on the tummy and keeps babies wanting more.

1. Steam plums and apples together for 7 to 9 minutes, until they are soft.

2. Reserve the water from the steamer.

3. Blend the plum-apple mixture in a blender until pureed. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of reserved water at a time, if necessary, until desired consistency is achieved.

Ingredients

  • 2 plums, peeled and cubed
  • 2 Fuji apples, peeled and cubed
